Moondance

The moon. It looks spooky tonight, like really spooky. There's nothing at all in the sky but dense dark clouds and in the middle there's the half moon casting its ghostly glow in a small radius around it. There are pearly white clouds floating occassionally across the moon, gliding like birds. These clouds are of various shapes. Just a few minutes ago I saw three bird-shaped ones, and then a unicorn and now there's a long, smoky snake-like creature. But it has these thin, longish wings at a far end towards its sides. Oh, and there's a little pterodactyl sort of thing gliding in from the other side.
And now there cloudy shapes are diverging into thin smoky strands, circling the moon, as though dancing around it.
And the moon is growing brighter and sharper, metamorphosing from the diffused form was in earlier.
I wish I could take a picture.
It's all so beautiful and mysterious.

The perfect night to fly away into the dark, with nothing to guide you but moonlight. You can see the whole dark world below you, and the surreal glow of the moon above you. You can dance up there with the clouds.
The perfect night to cast a spell. A powerful spell that could raise the world to the exalted palace of Utopia.
Or maybe a love spell.

So that was what my evil brother was doing while I was gorging on tandoori chicken.

Anyway, about teacher's day.

It was the best teacher's day program we've ever had and I think the teachers loved it, especially after the not-so-pleasing-to-the-ear-and-eye performances the middle school put up the previous day. They were alright I guess, but they massacred Nothing else matters(why the hell did they even think of playing a Metallica song!?). But they did Carnival of Rust pretty well.
And then some kids came and danced to 'Pappu can't dance sala'(they weren't much better than the so-called Pappu, but it was better than having to listen to Hanna Montana-style Metallica).

The program the 12ths put up is definitely one they WILL remember. It was a quiz, organized by head girl. And it had lots of songs and dance in between, which were part of the questions. I sang coming back to life(which everyone really loved) and we played a few other songs. And Trisha And Akriti did all the dancing, and they really were brilliant, doing everything impromptu like that. And then there was a teachers vs students dumb charades and an antakshari, where the entire student body(AND some teachers!) sang "PAPPU CANT DANCE SALA" very loudly ;)

Most of the teachers were pretty shocked and I half expected Mrs.Principal to lecture us but she took it all pretty well! It was a LOT of fun. The best teacher's day till date!

And then we went to watch Rock on, which is a really great movie. Unbelievable, the way Bollywood has woken up. The music was great and so were the costumes. I loved the costumes! And the beautiful instrumentz[Damn I wish I had a keyboard like that. And a drumkit like that! :-(] And to top it all, Arjun Rampal. *DROOOOL*

There are these times I feel so pathetically listless and tired, I don't feel like doing anything at all. I feel dead. It worries me a lot. I get bored of everything very quickly. I don't like talking to people because I feel its too much of a waste of energy talking. Somehow, everyone around seems so stupid and immature. All they do is gossip about people they barely know, and about matters they have practically no idea of. You hear a wide variety of heavily distorted versions of the same story from a large number of people, each claiming to have been informed by 'reliable sources'. Yeah right. I know it's supposed to be fun and entertaining but I'm very tired of all of it. As a result, in school I completely stay out of all such conversations. I have become too impassive, too 'laid back', too unwilling to 'waste energy' by opening my mouth, talking, laughing at stupid jokes[Earlier, if there had been a laughing olympiad, I would've won the silver(Neo would have won the gold for his innumerable episodes of falling down on the road as a result of laughing too much, and resisting being dragged up by his friends until he was in grave danger of being run over by a car)], and erm...thinking of laughing makes me feel a lot lighter so I won't go on about this. :-) But I feel like I live on another world. Maybe I should go live on another planet or something.

I don't feel like drawing contorted brains, cockroaches and ears and eyes(not of the cockroach) and I don't feel like calculating minimum areas of oddly shaped tents, nor do I feel like memorising the contents of a gruesome potion made by three gruesome witches, so I might as well go to sleep.
Bye.

Lazy noons.

The wind blows gently and the little yellow flowers on thet tree are nodding happily. It's raining leaves around. Little yellow yellow leaves, little grren ones, and a few bigger green dance through the air and fall lightly to the ground. You can see the wind in litte whirls, as falling leaves waltz around in little circles. And then a few rise above the ground, almost in a miniature wind whirlpool.

The wind moves about in strange ways. There's one little tree in the middle of a long line of trees suddenly wiggling and rustling while the others around are still and silent.
There's a whole stretch of leaves lying on the ground but all of a sudden, three or four leaves somewhere in the middle rise and chase each other around in a circle for a few seconds and then they float back down.

Slowly, the grey clouds inch towards each other from different directions. The sky turns a dense grey-blue. The rain starts very suddenly. It recedes suddenly too, and then the sky glows an etehreal amber. A strong, strangely bright, heavenly glow. Everything becomes momentarily luminous. Bright green in various shades.

The rain still falling softly glitters. If you look up you can see a rainbow. The grey clouds are now parting and moving away sowly, giving way to an endless expanse of too-clear blue. The rain stops and the sun shines again. Solid streaks of sunlight fall on the wet ground and on the trees, making them glimmer.

"Cold november rain.." Though it isnt' november.
The strains of the aalap of Brindavani Sarang I learnt yesterday play in my head.

Rain and a wicked game

It began to rain. One drop after the other, slowly at first, and then in a rush. Each drop was illuminated by the little orange light in front. Each drop glowed orange before more fell. It looked like little dancing specks of orange. It was dark all around, except for the little orange light and the dancing specks.

It was beautiful.

We were the only ones outside getting drenched but we sat there and watched the rain dancing.

What a wicked game you play
To make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do
To let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say
You never felt this way
What a wicked thing to do
To make me dream of you
I don't wanna fall in love

I really dont know whats gotten into me these days. I seem so listless and uninterested in practically everything. I've begun to actually HATE going to school and I don't like any of the classes. I hate english classes cause the pest of a teacher keeps making us write answers in class. Hell I don't even feel like staying awake in class. I never submit my work. I hate writing english answers in class. I just feel VERY lazy. I wasn't like this before. There were other people who weren't writing as well but she threatened us with dire warnings of deducting marks from our exams(trust me she really does that), and everyone bucked up and submitted whatever they wrote but I didn't bother. I got caught. I still didn't bother. I've really given up caring and it's somehow scaring me now.

And it's not only english. I don't think I even need to mention bangla, where I used to sleep in class anyway, but now I don't stay awake for even a SINGLE period in the week. I don't bother to listen at all in physics class. And I can't bear to stay awake even in chemistry. We have a new teacher who DRAGS her words and irritatingly stresses on the wrong syllables and after that, repeats EVERY SENTENCE twice. The only classs I can bear these days is bio.

Today we had to prepare slides of muscle tissue from the leg of a cockroach. It was an unpleasant experience, to say the least. I really do not wish to recall the entire process. We were given chloroformed cockroaches(fortunately, mine was properly chloroformed). Piyali screamed, Debosmita heard Piyali scream, looked at her own cockroach, screamed and dropped her watchglass. Dr.D screamed at them. Vasudha went into hysterics. Antara was shaking so much she almost dropped her cockroach on Chitrika. Srijonee on the other hand, calmly took her cockroach, poked it around a bit with the scalpel and ventured to cut off its leg without even wincing. I didn't much like the idea of having to cut legs off a cockroach, and I didn't feel muck like looking at the cockroaches, so I did everything in a hurry and I cut the wrong part of the leg and couldn't get any tissue and I couldn't see ANYTHING under the microscope so I had to do the whole thing again. :-(. Sahana, on the other hand not only cut cockroach legs, she actually dissected the ENTIRE COCKROACH and showed us its stomach and and its alimentary canal. We tried to find the heart but we couldn't.

I really hope we don't get this for an exam. Goat nerve is much easier. You get disgusting slimy white gooey tubular masses of spinal chord which you're supposed to 'slit open' and scrape out the grey matter from the inside using a scalpel and put it on a slide and tease it around nicely and stain it and squash it, etc. I didn't get to see much in my slide, so I spent the rest of the class making pretty patterns on filter paper with eosin. I ended up dropping lots of it on my skirt.

Anyway, I'm doing my bio project on viruses, which is a really cool topic, specially rabies which is a really cool disease. ;) I didn't want to do the old conventional stuff like AIDS and chickenpox and stuff.

I learnt a really pretty raag called Kalavati, which is actually a carnatic raag. Its good stretching excercise for the fingers because you have to jump from komal ga straight to pa. And it sounds very pretty too. It sounds like a pretty little girl dancing. :-)

Well, I better get going and finish my project. I've written quite a lot I guess.

Sounds of the soul.

Raag Malkauns is one of the most beautiful ,popular and most ancient of the raagas in Hindustani Classical music. Raag Malkauns belongs to Bhairavi Thaat or scale of Hindustani classical music. It is a pentatonic raag ie its type is Audav Audav and this raag is sung at late night. The notes of this raag corresponds to Bhairavi Thaat ie, komal notes are used.

In raag Malkauns Rishabh and Pancham are prohibitted. When ascending(aaroha) the notes are Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa. While descending(awaroha) the notes are Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Sa.The vaadi swara of Raag Malkauns is Madhyama. Sanwaadi Swar is Sadaja. These notes in combination portray darkness and secret.

The raag is said to have evolved when Lord Shiva performed The Taandava dance. The raag thus evokes a feeling of vigour or we can say this Raag is a VEER rasa raga. And as traditions in Indian classical music ascribes this vigour and veer rasa is not the veer rasa of the battlefield but a sense of conquering the self and reaching a state of inner satisfaction.
This raga is said to have supernatural powers and can conjure spirits if rendered properly. Though a simple pentanoic raga in structure, it requires great skills to convey and evoke the mood of Malkauns.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DwI3bbXGlA

Pure magic. Yes. There's no other way to describe it. When I play Malkauns, I feel powerful. When I play this raag, I feel like I can rule the world, that nothing can overpower me. I feel as if all the pain and fear I've ever felt is rising within me like a tornado. It gives me strength, strength which creeps upto my fingers as they dance upon the strings. Melody fills everything around me, surrounding me, almost like a shield. Nothing can touch me. No one can harm me. There is this a supernatural feel in the ga-ma-dha-ni-sa...

(E)Xuberance, etc.

I haven't blogged for a pretty long time and I have loadz and loadz of things to write about!

Xuberance took place on saturday and I really did enjoy it. Our hard work and practice(and being stuffed with food up to the neck by Shreya's mother) did pay off. For once I was really very happy with our performance. It couldn't have been more perfect. The judge was Tanmoy Bose and that did make me a little nervous initially and I did make a minor mistake and missed a beat but i came back with what sounded like a complicated tehai :P. Shreya also won best solo performer! I know this is a stupid place to make acknowledgement, but the least I can do is to mention that this really wouldn't have been possible without Konika di's help. We were pretty clueless until she came and perfected us.
It felt amazing when I went backstage after our performance and every single person there were like 'whoa you played well!' :)

Then us musicians and the reps went out to a little sweet shop for 'lunch' which comprised of 2 pepsis, two packets of lays classic salted chips and bingo mad angles and two samosas shared among the six of us.(My mother would forbid me from stepping out of the house if she knew this).

We lost the quiz badly, and Sreeja knew all the answers but wasn't in the team. They handed out Tropicana apple juice to audience members who could answer questions put to them so Sreeja ended up with four juice packets and we happily drank away. :)

Then. The most awaited even of the fest - western music. It started pouring heavily on our way to the school grounds and we were completely drenched(drat it HAS to rain at almost every fest I attend!). The worst part was, there were no other people there other than the band and the reps for a while so I was the lone audience member from our school. :( But people did turn up eventually.

The rest of the girl bands there weren't really great and there was one school(I don't remember which) who did Zombie as part of the medley(they had four vocalists mind you) and they kept coming back to the chorous of Zombie and they did that three times and we FELT like zombies. CBS was decent but their PSP12 was rather slow. Xaviers were very good and they ended with Rock you like a Hurricane and Joker and the Thief. And after that there was a lazer light show which was brilliant.
And I got to meet a lot of people there. Thatz one thing I like about fests. :)

So that's it about Xuberance.

School is becoming increasingly boring by the day, unless you count mondayz and our football matches. this time we actually had proper goalposts in proper places and proper teams(but too many people actually). It was a good game. Only problem was that we had to join some juniors while they were playing because our classes clashed. It would be great to play 7-a-side like we used to. Atleast we'll all get to kick and pass the ball around. Improvement, yes. I wish school could have a proper football team like basketball and we could have proper football tournaments. The girls schools in Calcutta should get together and consider the idea.

Oh and I wanted to know, is there any truly unisex team sport(other that mixed doubles in tennis) where men and women play in the same team? If anyone knows, please let me know.

Anyway, as for more recent(random) events:
1. The bangla debate in school where once again, Adrija stole the show and made the debate a stand up comedy. We all agreed unanimously that she should have won but she didn't, but she was undoubtely the star of the show. After the winners were announced we created quite a noise shouting 'go Adrija!!'. I don't think anyone really bothered to congratulate the winners. A truly unprecedented event!
2. I made patterns with iodine on filter paper during bio. And i got really pretty plasmolyzed cells under the microscope. :)
3. I stayed up till 3:30 am last night to complete filework and I kept myself awake by indulging in a midnight feast of chocolates, chips and fruit juice. It is fun I tell you.
4. J.A.M, our music club is actually getting down to being a real club rather than gossip sessions and we've started preparing agendas for every meeting. AND school has a BEAUTIFUL electric piano!! :D
5. Neo asked me to say something about his bass solos. He's composing some new ones and the ones he last made me listen to were very cute(sorry Neo, I know you're going to have my blood for this). Hopefully(for him) the new ones won't be 'cute'. ;) [=:*]

Haha.

Now I better get myself off to bed because if I stay write anymore, you might be under risk of suffering brain damage. good night!

It will be remembered.

For some reason I've developed a sudden liking for the song "She Will be loved". I like the line "Look for the girl with a broken smile". :)
It rained really heavily one of these days and I actually went to school(we were supposed to have a test) and our shoes and socks were dripping wet so most of us walked around school practically barefoot and we hung our socks on our chairs. It's not that I don't like rain but no sunshine for a week is a bit depressing. I was seized by this sudden urge to do a watercolour, so I spent 15 bucks buying handmade paper from the stationery shop. But I still haven't had time to start it. In fact I'm not even sure what I want to paint. I know I want a rainy background and a girl wearing a bright pink dress amidst the gloom, but I don't know how I'm going to go about it.

It really has been long since I blogged and it's a really nice feeling to just go on typing whatever random stuff comes to your mind.
Last tuesday we played football in school. For some wierd reason, they'd kept the goalposts perpendicular to each other(I guess they'll shift them later), so we played with just one goalpost. Seven-a-side, one universal goalkeeper. It was the most hilarious game ever. First of all, none of us really know how to play, so we went about randomly kicking the ball(at the goalie, not at the goalpost)! We forgot about teams as soon as we started playing, so it was like 14 girls on the field running after one ball. And then 14 of us would get at the ball and all 14 of us would kick it in all different directions. And then Trisha got the ball between her feet and she was so excited she kept hopping around like that until someone had the sense to kick the ball through her feet. We did manage to get in a few goals though(injuring the goalie in the process). But we had a whale of a time with all that kicking and falling and rolling in the mud. :)
I'm looking forward to the next game, but it would be nice if we could really play proper football for once with proper goalposts and everything. It's actually more fun than basketball! I remember, the last time I played football before this was when I was in class 8 and my shoe flew away when I kicked.

I think I'll go paint now. Let's see what I can come up with. :)

Questions.

Do you glance at your phone every few minutes waiting for an important phone call and just when you go to the bathroom your phone rings? And when you call back the other person is busy and cant talk? And then when he/she calls again you are once again busy..and you call back and...the cycle goes on!?
This happens to me all the time with most callers and at the end of the day all my friends really mad at me because I never pick up the phone. Wierd. Very Wierd.

Have you ever so bored you feel like throwing yourself and everything around you out of the window?(Seriously)

Have you ever been struck real hard by a line all of a sudden in a particularly boring bengali poetry class?

Have you ever gone out when there was a powercut and flashed a torch into the sky and stared at the sky wondering if there were other worlds out there? (And when someone asks you what you're doing you tell them you're trying to communicate with aliens).

Have you ever painted a scene you saw in a dream? Or dreamt about being in a scene you just painted? It's wierd.

Do you, like me suck at being rude? Being polite all the time sucks.

Do you feel like you're so radically different from other people that no one understands you?

Have you ever hated anyone suddenly for a reason that makes no sense?

Have you loved somebody/something for a reason you can't fathom?

Have you ever been afraid to ask a question because you already know the answer, but you're afraid of hearing it?

Have you ever stared out of the window wishing you could fly?

I know this is a rather abrupt end and I would have gone on but right now I'm sorta itching to get back to my keyboards.
Oh, and I've stopped using 'z' instead of 's', atleast in my blog posts.

Creation, Destruction, Recreation.

This will in the end turn out to be a more or less random post even though I set out with the idea of writing about specific things.
To begin with, the fisrt fests of this year have ended and I have to say I'm more than relieved. Honestly, the 3 weeks of all-day practice, waking up at 5:00am, starving(our drummer doesn't eat) are really getting to me. I'm not really in a mood to write about Creation in detail but the least I can say about it is that it was a little disappointing. OK maybe that was an understatment. We were all excited about performing on saturday but a storm came and blew up the stage and after that we all comepletely lost all our enthusiasm and going on stage today felt so normal and unexciting.
And I don't think it would be a good idea to give a detailed account of why Creation wasn't what we expected. Creation and destruction.

I'm tired and I'm fed up of everything at the moment.
I listen to Nymphetamine every night and somehow I feel like its what keeps me going these days. Somehow. Yeah. I wonder if that happenz to anyone else. Once particular song you just can't do without. One particular song that touches you deep down somehow, even if you don't know how and why. Makes you feel..weel, not optimistic or energetic exactly but..well it's difficult to explain - like there's nothing else. I think maybe Nymphetamine has that effect coz of itz heavy bass and the high-key keyboardz..

I must make up for all the eating and sleeping I've missed in the past few days. So I will go to sleep. And I will refuse to eat anything but biriyani 3 times a day.

Hey Friend

Hey friend
I miss you now
I hope I'm still you friend
You've been there all along
Even when I didn't realize you were
You were there all the time, when I needed you and when I didn't
Thank you friend for being the light when I was trapped in the dark
Thank you friend for smiling with me
Thank you friend for believing me even when you shoudn't have
Hey friend, I'm sorry now
Forgive me again, even if you've forgiven me before
Hey friend
I don't care what they say
You'll be my friend anyway
Hey friend
I wish you were here
Like you once used to be
Hey friend
Where are you now?
I'm missing you.

Things.

So here I am again, jabbering randomly.
It's class 12 and we have a really really horrible chemistry teacher who shoutz like mad and can't teach. But we had really pretty deep purple solutionz to titrate. :)

There is a man who sells flowers in front of school every morning. Sometimes I wish I could give someone flowers. Yellow or white roses. I've never given anyone flowers. And no one has ever given me flowers either. The flowers remind me that there's so much joy and love in the world.

Last year there was a crow that used to come to the windowsill and caw loudly during every math class. I think it liked math, unlike us because every time we shooed it away it would come back after a few minutes. But it never turned up for any other classes.

This year the classroom window has an extremely unenchating view of the next building and the roof of the next building and a pigeon who sits there all day like a statue and blinks occassionally.
And there's a sparrow who seems to like science a lot - she sits at the top of the window and chirps the entire day - ENTIRE DAY!! But the intelligent little creature flies away when thingz get a monotonous but she promptly reappearz at the beginning of the next period.
Ishani got so tired of Chirpy in the morning and she told Ananya that the chirping really got on her nerves. And Chirpy got pretty offended and didn't turn up till after lunch break(after we'd all apologized to her).

I guess the dayz of drawing animal farmz in math class iz over. :(
I liked last year.

"Last Goodbye"

The last time ever I'll see your face
The last time ever I'll return your poison smile
So I said my last goodbye like you were my best friend
I waved goodbye as if you had made my world beautiful
I said I'd miss you like I'd cared to know what you were
Yeah, it's time now to remove the masks
I've said my last goobye.

Vacation!

So we went to a place called Falta for a day. It waz full moon. We stayed up the entire night chatting and watched light take over the night. I've never watched sunrise before. The sky slowly began to lighten on one side and on the other side there was what seemed like electric blue and red streakz on the black sky. That was wierd. It looked as if someone had grabbed blue and red oil paint and splattered it on the sky.
And then we wanted to go down but the gate waz locked and we couldn't wake anybody up so we ended up jumping off the first floor balcony to escape.
Then we had to cross a really high, extremely unstable bridge made of 3 or 4 bamboo stick tied together with deep marshy soil feet below. One look down and...... whew! One of the most nerve racking thingz I've ever done.
Anyway, I'm off to bombay for a week and I'm pretty tired and I don't feel like writing any more.

Here are some pictures.

The terrace of our hotel overlooked a brick kiln. Oh yeah, best part part was that the room me and my cousins occupied(it would be wrong to say 'slept in' coz we didn't sleep) had around 13 windows. There were more windows than walls. There were people working at the kiln all night.

The group.

You can see the boats and the irregular edges of the river bank.

Sunrise.

Coming back.

Memories. Old things.
Its the end of this academic year. Ends of academic years are much more significant than calendar years.

I remember last year this time we were giving our ICSE. I remember the first exam. It was english language and I was really happy with my essay. And then every day after the exam me, Anushka and Arunima would go to Gupta Brothers and eat samosas. And then we all got mega mega pissed with Mamata Bannerjee for calling a bandh and our computer exam got postponed to a week after ICSE was supposed to end. What a headache.
During ICSE I spent more time online every than I had all year.
And there was this ICSE 2007 community on Orkut which was about the only community that didn't have crappy games like 'gift a rose to the person above you' or 'would you date the person above you'. It was a PROPER community with proper discussions.
And then ICSE ended and we got our results and we were all very happy.

And then we jammed a few times and seriously discussed forming a band. Plan was we'd practice twice a month on sunday afternoons.
Then class 11 started. It seems like it was just the other day I walked out of Supriyo Ghosh's first phyiscs class my head spinning with vectors and decided that there was no way we could manage a band if we wanted to flourish in life :P . And then I struggled through the entire worksheet he gave us and was really sad when I got 7/20 in the test. Nowadays I don't bother. By far that has been the second best score I ever got on one of his tests. :P (Best was a test on thermodynamics).

Everything waz new - new people, new friendz, new concepts...

And once we planned to 'group study'(no, I mean really study - we actually took our bookz with us) and all we ended up doing was listening to various versions of 'Another Brick in the Wall' , telling each other ghost stories and most importantly, eating loadz of biriyani. Predictably, my mother didn't allow me to 'group study' after that!

Then there were the tests. In the beggining we were worried but now we've gotten used to getting scores like 3/20, 5/25, 19/90, 23/150, 6/75(believe me that was the 5th highest), etc.
Scary.

Then....so many funny incidents. After SG's phyics classes we would go to CCD and every time we went we sat at the same place and the table next to us was always occupied by people of varying degrees of wierdness. Once there was this drunk man who had long hair covering his face. We called him 'it'. :D And once there was a wierd couple who were having an intesnely serious talk and the stuff we overheard is actually too wierd to post here. :P
And of course, we never had any money and once we jut bought 2 cookies which 5 of us shared.

After one of GD's hopeless tests we decided to go to CCD(Srijoni was supposed to treat us) but then there was a huge drama which resulted in the 8 of us running all over Lake Road trying to catch Srijoni who was trying to run(I don't really remember the exact circumstances) and it was all really funny. And Srijoni would randomly get mad at the guys and try to borrow my shoes(I thought she was going to attack them with the shoes but turned out she wanted to wear them so that she could run fast enough. She would use her own heeled sandals to attack since she couldn't run in them).

And then there's the good old pepsi shop outside GDz.. :)

So many things. So much learnt. So many feelings, some lost, some not quite.
So much forgotten.
Friends made, friends lost, friends come back again.

Everything follows a cycle. And in the end, everything that's meant to be becomes OK. Everything becomes alright even if you think it never will.
Everything comes back.
